But even rechargeable batteries don't last forever. Call2Recycle® is a nonprofit battery stewardship program that's worked with The Home Depot since 2001 to offer in-store rechargeable battery collection. As a U.S. retail partner, The Home Depot has helped recycle millions of pounds of rechargeable batteries.

What types of batteries can I recycle? We currently collect and recycle rechargeable and single-use batteries weighing less than 11 lbs. (5 kg) and cellphones. We do not accept wet-cell or car batteries.

Store your container of batteries in a cool, dry place. Room temperature is fine, but avoid direct sunlight or extreme heat. Incidents can occur when batteries (or the devices they power) are exposed to inclement or excessively hot weather.

Disposing of Alkaline Batteries

Most places don't accept single-use alkaline batteries for recycling. You can't take single-use batteries to Call2Recycle drop-off sites at The Home Depot. In most places, you can put alkaline batteries, such as AA, AAA and D batteries, in the trash.

The Home Depot partners with several reputable 3PLs, including XPO Logistics, NFI, and Schneider Logistics.

The Home Depot offers a generous commission on products. Our current commission is 1% on products, mobile, and buy online pick up in-store orders, 1% on appliances, and 8% on select home décor products. The more you sell, the more you earn.

Never store batteries in a plastic sandwich bag. If loose batteries contact each other, or if the terminals come into contact with other metal objects, this could cause the batteries to short-circuit.

Li-ion has higher losses if stored fully charged rather than at a SoC of 40 percent. (See BU-808: How to Prolong Lithium-based Batteries to study capacity loss in Li-ion.) Elevated temperature hastens permanent capacity loss. Depending on battery type, lithium-ion is also sensitive to charge levels.

Condensation from putting batteries in the refrigerator can damage them. Extreme cold and extreme heat can also reduce battery life. Instead, you should store batteries somewhere dry, where they aren't susceptible to humidity, and at normal room temperature, around 68 – 78 degrees Fahrenheit.

Since batteries have a finite shelf life, we assume that they become worthless once they stop working. That is not the case. The materials found inside some types of batteries, such as lead acid, still have market value that you can cash in on.

Contact AAA and we'll send a AAA Battery Service technician out to test your battery, starting, and charging system. If your battery fails, our technicians have batteries on their service trucks to change it out quickly. They'll even recycle your old battery for you.
