Identification: The Teardrop Clownfish is sometimes sold as the Percula Clown, even though it is not. The color pattern is very similar. The black outlines on the white stripes are thinner on the Teardrop Clownfish when compared to the Percula Clownfish. The advantage of the Teardrop Clownfish is that it is much hardier. Distinquished from regular Ocellaris clownfish by the 1/2 white stripe on their side that resembles a teardrop, rather than a full stripe. They also have a different number of spiny rays in the dorsal fin. These two species do not overlap in their natural distribution. The true percula is found only in Melanesia and Northern Australia. Mature specimens typically develop a striking black coloration between stripes.
