The Batto Batto no Mi, Model: Vampire is a Mythical Zoan-type Devil Fruit that allows the user to transform into a hybrid and full version of a Vampire, making the user a Creature of the Night (夜間の生物 Yakan no Seibutsu^?). It was eaten by Azrael.

This Devil Fruit allows its user to transform into a vampire, a renown undead creature in folklore as well as a human-vampire hybrid at will. With experience, the user can selectively transform as well, in a manner akin to the famed Marco the Phoenix. In comparison with other Zoan-type Devil Fruits, the transformations of the Batto Batto appear more humane.

As with every Zoan-type Devil Fruit, the user’s transformations grant them an immense boost to all of their physical abilities. With a single kick, the user is able to keep up with users of speed-enhancing techniques such as Soru of the Rokushiki and is often even confused for it, denoting a high level of leg strength.^[1] Their blows are powerful enough to easily shatter through stone or send opponents flying a great distance.,^[2] Additionally they can easily catch opponents off-guard due to the sheer speed at which the attacks can be performed.^[3] Due to the vast increase in physicality the fruit gives him, Azrael has often be referred to as a “monster”, ^[4] and has, in more than one occasion, invaded pirate strongholds by his lonesome.^[5]

Along with their change in physical prowess, the user also gains several physical enhancements befitting of a vampire, and by extension those of a bat. Both the hybrid and full vampire form come equipped with a sharp set of claws. The claws are durable enough to clash against users of Busoshoku Haki,^[6] meaning that they can cleanly cut through many materials that are comparatively weaker, moreso, the sharpness of their claws allows them to utilize the air pressure in a way akin to swordsmen.^[7] Overall, they provide the user the ability to utilize both blunt and slashing damage via their strikes. Likewise, their fangs are razor-sharp, easily capable of sinking through human flesh.^[8] The user’s bite force, like many species of bats is generated through mechanical advantage, allowing them to bite through some toughened armors.^[9]

Out of all of their outward physical enhancements, the most notable one are the wings the fruit grants. Aside from being one of the few Zoans in the planet that can give this ability,^[10] as a bat is the only existing mammal with wings, their anatomy is quite different than that of even most other types of flying Zoans, granting the user a unique set of abilities that are unknown to both bird and insect-type Zoan devil fruits. For instance, the user’s wings are made up of a flexible bones structure and several thin layers of skin, in comparison to a bird’s bone structure which is rigid and made up of feathers. This allows the user to gain an incredible amount of maneuverability in comparison, as they are easily able to move around attacks or objects,^[11] even when traveling at incredible speeds. The wings, aside from granting flight, because they are made up of connective tissue, elastic fibres, nerves, muscles and blood vessels, they are quite literally an extension of the user, and can function as an extra set of limbs, granting its user several advantages in combat. Additionally, the user’s wings are composed of Merkel cells, sensitive areas within the surface of their additional appendages that allows them to detect and adapt to the change in airflow, granting them an enhanced sense of touch somewhat. The sharp edges of their wings also allow the user to create vortices quite easily, and by extension interact with the wind. It should be noted that the wings are strong enough to allow the user to carry another person with them without so much as slowing down.^[12] Likewise, the speed at which they can travel easily surpasses that of most seaborne vessels,^[13] and due to their lightness, even other flying Zoans.

As an added bonus of the Mythical aspect of their Zoan, the user also gains one ability unrelated to their physiological prowess. In the case of the Vampire fruit, the user’s ability is dubbed as Soul Eater (霊喰い Tamakui^?) . This allows the user to interact with the phenomenon known as life-force, otherwise known as a person’s vitality. Specifically they can absorb it in order to rejuvenate themselves and regenerate their injuries. Stealing the life and stamina of the target causes them to rapidly age during the process. While alternatively strengthening the users body and restoring their health.

The life-force's effect is unique from other healing fruits such as the Tori Tori no Mi, Model: Phoenix or the Chiyu Chiyu no Mi. Its regeneration acts in a manner of completely replenishing the user's body and boosting it with excess revitalizing energy. It becomes nourishment to heal tissue down to the cellular level before strengthening it. The nourishing energy even promotes biological growth to areas that are without damage or are already healed. Its power rejuvenates the user by using the years worth of life-energy as fuel to replenish the user's body. Granting its user a form of eternal youthfulness by bringing them back to their prime through the surplus life energy. The continuous vitalization essentially halts the user from aging since their bodies are constantly healed. Azrael states that as his cells die naturally, which would cause a normal person to age, his excess life-force being circulates becomes nutriment for his body to create new cells.^[14] The flowing energy heals dying or older cells as well. Causing the vampire fruit to classify as one of few to actually grant the user immortality through agelessness. It can also prevent sickness. Its extra life-force applied to one's body becomes sustenance for growth. And so the Devil Fruit user's physical body will become stronger and receive enhancements correlated to life-energy utilized. It can also provide sustenance in absence of natural nutrition. Allowing its user to survive off of life energy.

It is shown that the user's heart is the organ, as revealed through Catherine in Azrael's case, responsible for user's controlling life-energy.^[15] Excess life-force circulates the user's body, both subconsciously and consciously in a way akin to blood going through their bloodstream. Victims of its power will rapidly age according to the amount of life-force stolen. Thus the user is able to weaponize its absorption of life-force. Since the user can weaponize their absorption of life-force, the opposite is also true. As life-force, unlike one’s soul functions in a way akin to food being consumed and serving as nutrition, while the vampire fruit can be used to take way life force, it can also be used to give it to others, inducing similar effects as when used on the user themselves. Much like how the user can take life force by sinking their fangs or injecting their claws into someone, by doing the opposite, the user can revitalize others. This was first seen when Henry Benjamin bit into Azrael’s arm in order to heal a gruesome injury.^[16] Interestingly enough, this power can traverse through objects, such as needles, as shown when Azrael used them to heal Naosaki Jun.^[17]

Internally, several changes also occur whenever the user transforms. Firstly, the user gains an incredibly efficient circulatory system all throughout their body. The user’s heart is three times larger when transformed, and because of this can pump more blood (or life-energy). Their muscles are shaped in a way that support this blood back to the heart through rhythmic contractions. This, by extension, also means that the user gains a highly enhanced respiratory system to support their flight if they so wish. Interestingly enough, while the user most certainly gains extra “organs” of such, because their physiology is that of a vampire, and therefore, of one who is undead, this means that normally, the user’s organs stop working as if they were living. While in their hybrid form, they’re only half-undead, in their full Vampire form, normally, the user loses all sorts of functions under most circ*mstances. This, however, also ties in to their endurance and durability. Because the user enters an undead state, injuries rarely mean anything to them. The user can be impaled, suffer extensive concussive damage, and even bifurcation and still appear as if nothing had ever happened to them.^[18] Since the user is barely living, most cybernetic scans are unable to read through them.^[19]

In terms of senses, the vampire fruit is a tier above most. The user is able to emit ultrasonic sounds to produce echoes throughout their vicinity. Since they control the frequency of these sounds, aside from being able to use them as a weapon, by using specific frequencies, they can create a detailed 3-D mind map of their surroundings through the returning echoes, allowing them to localize everything within it in a manner akin to echolocation.^[20] As the part of their brain responsible for processing sound is so well-tuned, the user’s hearing is incredibly enhanced, to the point where they can detect even the faintest of breathing sounds from others. Aside from hearing, their eyesight is relatively good, being adapted to both night and daylight vision. Finally, the user’s sense of smell is also enhanced, not only naturally, but because of their mythical ability. The user is able to smell the life-force of those around them. As life-force is incredibly individualistic, as shown when Azrael notes differentiating scents such as Varius’, comparing it to the opening of the gates of hell.^[21] The user is able to tell one person from the next simply by sniffing, even from sizable distances.^[22] As an added bonus, the user has a sense of magnetoreception, being highly sensible to the Earth’s magnetic field, although the complete specs of this are unknown.

Weaknesses[]

Despite the infamous nature of the fruit's immortality, it also possesses several crucial weaknesses.

It is revealed that the heart plays a major component in the user. The seastone bullet that pierced Azrael heart not only paralyzed him, but also left the marine in excruciating pain which was noted to be different from normal wounds. ^[23]

Since the user's immortality and youthfulness is tied to the stolen life-force, it does not have the benefit of other fruits in the similar category such as the Chiyu Chiyu no Mi or the Tori Tori no Mi, Model: Phoenix. Rather it relies on an external source in order to achieve its level of immortality. The user can be extremely restrained in situations where viable options for absorption is not available. And opponents who do not have life-force, such as androids, are immune to the fruit's power. This was demonstrated when Azrael fought Kuzma. Being surrounded by innocent island citizens made it impossible for him to utilize the fruit's healing abilities. ^[24]

The stolen life-force is infused within the user's body. Flowing through the veins and nourishing their body as blood. Even in their human state, the excess life-force serves the purpose of sustenance. Replacing oxygen, food and water when the body is unable to access it while lessening the aging process. However, the user's life-force flows as blood when wounded. Allowing others to steal it back or use it as healing. This was revealed when Azrael allowed Benjamin to bite into his skin. Healing the nigh-fatal wounds sustained by the Marine Captain in under a minute. Leaving only a small scar.^[25]

Other than the aforementioned weaknesses, Azrael is also affected by the standard Devil Fruit weaknesses

Usage[]

Azrael is shown to possess great control of his transformations. Isolating the form to selective parts of his body in order to absorb his target's life-force without transforming fully. He is also fond of growing his Full-Beast form wings in his human state for better maneuverability.^[26]

Although Azrael is not fond of using his healing prowess on others, he is still willing to do so for personal reasons. Often bartering regeneration for information or other dubious plots. Azrael was able to to heal a wound on Henry Benjamin that would have taken months regularly, followed by permanent damage, in a matter of seconds. Allowing the Marine Captain to return to work immediately^[27] The second instance of the fruit's healing potency comes when he used it on Naosaki Jun. Not only awakening her from a two year coma but also allowing her body to also strengthen itself.^[28]

Human Form[]

Bloodsucking Demon[]

Bloodsucking Demon (吸血鬼 Kyūketsuki^?) is Azrael's vampire and human hybrid form, granting him a malicious appearance with fangs and deadly sharp claws. He is seen in this state a majority of the time. So much so, he refers to his human form as nothing more than a disguise.^[29] Azrael's senses are incredibly sensitive to the surrounding life-force. He utilizes the ability to smell life-energy in order to obtain stimulative information beyond the average human's range. Reaching conceptual levels such as smelling the emotional state of those around him.^[30] Thus Azrael can perform an in-depth scope of his opponent's power and heart. It is revealed on Junk Island, however, that strong scents can disrupt his sense of smell.^[31] Primarily, Azrael also uses this form to absorb life-force without the bulkiness and conspicuousness of his Full Beast transformation through his claws and teeth. Azrael's physical abilities also receive an exponential boost. Allowing him to endure attacks from powerful pirates while outperform those more than twice his size.
