He became only the fourth horses in 149 years to win the Kentucky Derby (G1) with only three previous starts. Ridden by Hall of Famer Castellano, Mage has been nothing but remarkable. Purchased as a 2-year-old for $290,000, Mage is trained by Gustavo Delgado, a top trainer in Venezuela before saddling his first horse in Florida in 2002. It took six tries for Perform to win his first race, but he followed it up with a victory April 15 in the Federico Tesio at Laurel. Just a sixteenth of a mile it looked like Perform had no shot to win, but under an incredible zig-zagging ride by Lynch he gamely got up by a head at the finish. McGaughey finished second in the 1989 Preakness with Easy Goer and fourth with Kentucky Derby winner Orb in 2013.
